CATHERINE THE GREAT is a sweeping historical epic written by Nigel Williams, the award-winning writer of Elizabeth I.

The series depicts the strong-minded, independent, and sexually liberated Catherine, who wielded supreme power throughout Russia for nearly half of the 18th century. Amid a politically tumultuous and sexually charged court, Catherine’s obsessive romance with lover Grigory Potemkin evolved into a unique and devoted relationship which helped shape Russia as we know it today.

Multi-award-winning Helen Mirren plays the lead role in the third commission from Sky and HBO’s high-end global drama partnership.

Produced by New Pictures and Origin Pictures.

"Arguably Helen Mirren's finest performance, Catherine The Great basks in its production value and intricately written script, bringing together a passionate, lustful and enticing series"
GQ
"Helen Mirren is fabulous in this sumptuous, spicy portrait of an empress"
The Independent
"The casting of Mirren in the role, which follows the Russian empress in the embattled latter years of her life, is a smart choice that proves its worth every time she’s onscreen"
Variety
